MEDICAL TREATMENT

Our aim is to provide the most up-to-date and appropriate medical service possible.

We treat all small animals including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, and an assortment of small exotic pets.

Veterinary Science is constantly improving, and we have a strong commitment to continuing education for both vets and nurses. This includes post graduate courses, in house seminars, external conferences and use of internet resources. This ensures that we are all up to date on current treatments and can provide your pet with the very best of care. If your pet has to stay with us for any length of time, we have cages which are both clean and comfortable. We always ensure that all patients are adequately monitored both day and night.

Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is an adjunct treatment for a variety of conditions, particularly soft tissue injuries. It has been shown to significantly speed up the rate of healing after injury or surgery.

We have a Class 4 laser unit which is capable of treating any size dog or cat quickly and painlessly. Sometimes just one treatment is needed but often twice weekly treatments are used until the condition improves.

SURGICAL SERVICES

The hospital has a well equipped surgery with high standards of practice. All our instruments are autoclave sterilised and the surgeons wear caps, sterile gowns and gloves to ensure your pet undergoes sterile surgery. This means there is very little chance of post operative infections developing.

We routinely put animals undergoing surgery on an anaesthetic machine using the safest anaesthetics available and monitor them with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a dedicated nurse. This means that we offer an excellent survival and rapid recovery rates should your pet need surgery.

Desexing
We recommend desexing to all of our patients for several reasons:

  • To reduce the oversupply of animals in shelters around the state
  • For cheaper council registration
  • To reduce the urge to roam or escape
  • To reduce unwanted behaviours such as cat spraying, fighting and aggression
  • Remove risk of ovarian, uterine or testicular cancer
  • Reduction in risk of mammary cancer and prostatic disease
  • Remove risk of pyometra; a life-threatening infection of the uterus in entire female dogs

Desexing can be done safely at almost any age, depending on gender, size, health issues and other factors. For maximal benefit in decreasing mammary tumours, female animals should be spayed before their first season, which will occur from 5 to 6 months of age.

Soft Tissue Surgery

We provide a wide range of animal soft tissue procedures, including the following:

  • Removal of lumps (malignant and benign)
  • Biopsies
  • Eyelid surgery and eye removal
  • Exploratory surgery of the abdomen, removal of ingested material
  • Removal of bladder stones
  • Amputations (limb, digit)

Orthopaedic surgery

Orthopaedic intervention is often required secondary to broken bones, ruptured ligaments (cruciate ligament disease), severe osteoarthritis and developmental diseases. Dr. Green performs orthopaedic surgeries in house and is supported by visiting specialist surgeons for complicated cases.

DENTAL HEALTH

Tooth, gum pain and dental disease can be as severe in pets as it is in humans, but often goes unnoticed as most pets will continue to eat throughout. Unchecked, it can lead to infection that has been linked with the development of kidney and heart valve disease.

The most common presenting complaint from owners is bad breath, or “doggy breath”, which indicates that there are bacteria, and possibly infection, present. Regular check ups with your vet can help to recognise dental disease early, allowing  for intervention and treatment.

Dentistry is one of Dr. Green’s special interests, having been one of the first four veterinarians in Australia to be admitted to the College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Veterinary Dentistry. We have all the equipment and expertise necessary to perform both standard dental procedures such as teeth scaling and polishing, as well as advanced procedures such as endodontics (root canal fillings) and orthodontics.

NUTRITION

“You are what you eat” is an old saying that applies equally to our dogs and cats. At HAH  we stock a range of ‘superpremium’ foods such as Hills, Royal Canin, Prime100 and Delicate Care, which are far superior to supermarket brands. We also carry a selection of prescription diets and single protein diets for pets with special medical needs and allergies.

There are a number of benefits of feeding superpremium foods. Because they use muscle meat as a primary source of protein, rather than the cereals used in many supermarket dry foods, they are highly digestible resulting in less waste, output and faecal odour. Addition of fatty acids and oils produce a shiny coat and healthy skin. You also feed up to 50% less than supermarket dry foods due to the high digestibility of the protein content.

All foods that we sell come with a 100% moneyback guarantee.

HOME VISITS

For those cats (and dogs) that fear a trip to the vet clinic, we offer a home visit service to ensure they don’t miss out on important medical checks.

For a fee of $40, in addition to regular consult fees, a veterinarian (and nurse if required) can visit to perform general check ups, vaccinations or euthanasias in the comfort of your own home. This is also an excellent option for some of our clientele who do not drive.

These appointments are only able to be conducted during normal opening hours (not including Saturday), and must be scheduled in advance so that enough staff are available.
